VIN Decoder (Decode a Vehicle Identification Number from NHTSA vPIC)
nhtsavpic/decode-vin
Decodes a Vehicle Identification Number (or a partial VIN with * wildcards) into what the manufacturer filed with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: make, model, model year, trim, body class, engine (cylinders, displacement, horsepower, fuel), drive type, GVWR class, safety equipment, and the assembly plant, from NHTSA's vPIC database. Every value is a text string; an empty string means NHTSA holds no data on that field, not that the vehicle lacks the feature. ErrorCode is a comma-separated list of codes: 0 is a clean decode, and the response is still HTTP 200 with most decodable fields filled for codes such as 1 (check digit does not calculate) or 6 (incomplete VIN). Best for US-market vehicles from model year 1995. Data from NHTSA vPIC (a US government source); not an official NHTSA product.
