Marine Species Taxonomy Lookup by Scientific Name (WoRMS)

Looks up a scientific name in the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) and returns the matching taxon records: AphiaID, authority, whether the name is accepted or a synonym, the valid (accepted) name and AphiaID, rank, the classification from kingdom to genus, marine, brackish, freshwater and terrestrial flags, WoRMS citation and a link to the record. Only an exact scientific name matches (a prefix such as Gad returns nothing), and only marine taxa are searched. A name WoRMS does not know (it answers 204 with no body) comes back as a failed run with a provider error, not as an empty list. WoRMS data is licensed CC BY: keep each record's citation. No images.
